The number one question we get from patients interested in Botox or Dermal Fillers is “which one do I need?”
The short answer to that question is… it really depends.
Stay with us here – we know that may seem vague, but the reality is each and every patient is unique and has different symptoms and anti-aging goals. A patient may come to a consultation and say, “I really need to fix X, Y, and Z” but they may be surprised to hear from us that the injection site is not at all where they were expecting.
For example, a patient may not be pleased with their nasal labial fold or laugh lines. However, those are symptoms of a falling cheek so we would fill the back part of the cheek to help lift that up.
There are several types of fillers on the market and depending on the brand and their purpose, they can last anywhere from four to twenty-four months.
Many people assume the longer lasting filler should be used – makes sense, right? But that’s not always the case. Just because a brand or type of filler is long lasting doesn’t mean they should be used because there are certain fillers that are best for specific areas of the face. For example, the two-year filler is not available for use in the lips. Short term filler tends to be very useful with very fine lines in the face and provides extra support.
Patients can rest assured that Botox and Filler are not going to create a plastic Barbie doll appearance- this is just a common myth. The reality is that proper placement of Botox and/or fillers are going to enhance the beauty you already possess and it really shouldn’t even look like you have had any “work” done.
Juvederm: smooth hyaluronic acid-based gel is injected into the skin to restore volume and smooth out lines and wrinkles; commonly used for nasolabial folds, although it has many uses, including nonsurgical lip augmentation and mid-facial contouring. There is a Juvederm product designed for each area of the face.
Restylane: designed to integrate with the skin and act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid. Restylane provides a boost in facial volume that looks and feels shockingly natural and is frequently used to improve nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
Radiesse: stimulates collagen production in the body to create long-lasting cosmetic benefits and is composed of a water-based gel and calcium microspheres. This gel adds volume to the skin upon injection. Over the following months, the body safely absorbs it. The absorption process triggers collagen production in the skin, which will replace the Radiesse filler to extend the duration of your results.
Belotero: a dermal filler largely composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally occurring in the skin. It’s claim to fame is that it doesn’t cause the Tyndall effect, a blue hue appearing underneath the eye.
Dermal fillers are very versatile when it comes to treatment placement. The temples are a common area for filler placement to bring more volume and prevent a hollowed out appearance. Filler can also bring more volume to the cheeks, correct the shape of the nose and soften expression lines in the nasolabial folds. We can treat these areas on the face and more depending on what each patient is looking to achieve and their unique treatment plan.
As with any medical procedure, there are some risks involved. It’s so important for patients to take the time to find a reputable injector. It is always smart to request a consultation with a provider before taking the plunge and trusting them with a needle.
Filler injections can be performed by medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, but don’t be fooled by the letters behind their name. A common mistake is choosing an injector based on their degree, rather than their experience.
Ensure your injector is someone who is reputable and trustworthy. They should take the time to explain the treatment plan, potential side effects and what to expect for your first appointment. For added comfortability, consider asking your injector what types of continuing education they take part in and if they can share before and after pictures of previous patients.
