While we love keeping up with pop culture, it can also provide many misconceptions, especially about one of our favorite treatment options – Botox! There are many myths out there about Botox treatments but the truth is that there are many benefits to Botox as long as you find a reputable and trustworthy provider.
If you’ve been thinking about Botox as a cosmetic treatment option, you may have heard of some of the myths below. We’re going to separate fact from fiction and help you determine if Botox is the right treatment for your skincare goals.
Botox is meant to temporarily paralyze muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet, and smile lines, and other fine lines in the face. The effects of the treatment are only at the point of injection and should not impact the patient’s ability to show expressions. If injected by an experienced and reputable provider, Botox can take years off of your face and provide you with a softer, natural look.
It is important to note that the results of Botox are dependent on the experience and technique of the provider. To avoid the risk of looking “frozen” or “over-filled”, it’s imperative to seek out a provider with notable experience, references and before/after photos.
It is true that botox is both a protein and a neurotoxin but when appropriately administered it is an extremely safe procedure. Botox is FDA approved for many different cosmetic and medical treatments. As with any medication it is important to be aware of the side effects and to ensure you have a reputable injector. From 1993 to 1989 only 36 cases of adverse effects related to cosmetic Botox were reported to the FDA and thirteen of those cases were likely linked to underlying conditions with the patient. Be sure to give your provider a rundown of your medical history and any medications you are currently taking so they can be sure Botox is the right fit for you.
While we do recommend continuing Botox treatments, your wrinkles will not be worse after the Botox wears off. In fact, repeated injections on the same area of the face can help lessen the need to apply Botox over time. This is dependent on the patient but rest assured, your wrinkles will not get any worse if you discontinue Botox than they would had you not received treatment at all.
In the state of Illinois Botox providers must be a licensed medical provider. This includes nurse practitioners and doctors. While doctors and nurse practitioners can legally inject Botox, it doesn’t mean they are all qualified. Botox injections are considered a bit of an art so it’s imperative to seek out an experienced injector who specializes in Botox and Dermafillers. We recommend asking your potential injector any questions and concerns you may have and ask for before/after photos to help you feel comfortable.
The effects of Botox are not permanent and most people see it fade within three to six months. There are also several factors that may shorten or lengthen that period such as your facial structure and expressions, how much sun exposure your skin is subjected to, and other environmental factors. Patients are encouraged to return every three to four months for follow-up.
