What Is Eyelid Surgery?

As we age, our eyes naturally change. The result can be drooping and wrinkling in the upper eyelids and puffiness or bags in the lower eyelids, which can give the appearance of being older or more tired than we feel. Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery in Chicago or an eye lift, is a surgical procedure that modifies the shape and appearance of the eyelids and underlying support structures. The eyes are a central focal point of the face and significantly influence our overall appearance, and loose skin or drooping eyelids can cause us to look older or chronically tired. By removing excess skin and lifting sagging eyelids, a blepharoplasty can rejuvenate your eyes, making you look younger and more energized.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

It’s natural to wonder if any particular procedure can meet your aesthetic goals. Typically, people who elect to have eyelid surgery include the following:

  • Individuals who have excess skin or fat in the upper or lower eyelids
  • Those who have bags or puffiness under the eyes
  • People who have droopy or sagging eyelids that impair vision
  • Individuals who have wrinkles or fine lines around the eyes
  • Those who have asymmetrical or irregularly shaped eyelids
  • People who are generally healthy and have realistic expectations for the procedure

Your Initial Consultation

At Concierge Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, we start with a consultation at one of our five Chicago locations and also offer virtual consultations for your convenience. This consultation provides an opportunity to ask Dr. Epstein any questions you may have and get to know our approach to helping you meet your goals.

The blepharoplasty procedure is used to rejuvenate the eyes, but options for complementary procedures or treatments may be discussed at this time as well. The areas under the eyes and brow may be volumized using fat transfer or injection with filler to provide a more youthful appearance to the eye. Fat transfer or filler may be performed alone or in conjunction with conventional blepharoplasty.

Or Dr. Epstein may combine this treatment with other procedures like a facelift or laser resurfacing to erase the signs of aging from the upper or lower face. Patients may also consider combining the treatment of the eyelids with a brow or forehead procedure. A brow lift is used to elevate the position of the eyebrows, which can be a contributing factor to excess skin in the upper eyelid area.

After your physical assessment, prices will be covered in detail. If this procedure is right for you, we will customize a treatment plan that meets your needs and matches your budget. We will also discuss financing options and other ways to save on eyelid surgery costs.

The Day of Your Procedure

Eyelid surgery may be performed on the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both eyelids. Here’s a summary of what each entails:

Blepharoplasty Upper Eyelid

Upper eyelid surgery is commonly known as a lid lift, or “eyelift.” While upper eyelid surgery is typically performed for cosmetic reasons, it can also improve function by improving vision and alleviating headaches.

During the procedure, Dr. Epstein will make an incision along the natural crease of the eyelid. Through the incision, Dr. Epstein may remove excess skin, remove or reposition excess fat, or tighten the eyelid muscles.

Blepharoplasty Lower Eyelid

Lower eyelid surgery is performed primarily for cosmetic reasons. The procedure is done using one of two methods:

  • In one method, Dr. Epstein will make an incision below the lower eyelash in a natural skin fold or crease. Through the incision, Dr. Epstein will remove or reposition skin or fat and may tighten the eyelid muscle.
  • In the other method, Dr. Epstein will make an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid. This is called a transconjunctival incision. This technique does not remove excess skin but can remove or reposition periorbital fat.

Once complete, externally visible incisions are sutured using removable stitches, which results in less scarring. The procedure may be performed under general or local anesthesia and typically lasts one to two hours. You will be able to go home on the day of your surgery. For those concerned about scarring, note that the incisions will be concealed in the natural structure of the eyelid, with scars blending into the natural creases or folds of the periorbital skin.

Recovery and Results

Aftercare instructions are provided to patients, detailing how to care for the incisions and the application of ice, as well as the need to maintain head elevation while sleeping for the first few nights. Blepharoplasty recovery usually takes about five to seven days, and patients typically resume normal routines within a day after surgery, excluding strenuous activity. While upper eyelid surgery has little associated bruising or swelling, your eyelids may feel tight or sore.

For lower eyelid surgery, you may experience additional symptoms, but these usually resolve in several days. Patients typically find that Tylenol can treat post-surgical discomfort, but additional pain medication is always made available if needed. While blepharoplasty can turn back the clock on your appearance, it does not stop the aging process. Your blepharoplasty results will eventually fade with time, but many patients enjoy their rejuvenated look for up to a decade.
