Liposuction FAQ

Will liposuction help me lose weight?

Will liposuction help get rid of cellulite?

Will I be put to sleep during liposuction?

Will there be scarring after lipo?

Will fat return after liposuction?

Will liposuction help me lose weight?

Lipoplasty is a body contouring procedure. It is not a weight-loss treatment and is not intended to treat obesity. Optimal results are most likely with patients who are at a stable weight.

Will liposuction help get rid of cellulite?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that can help eliminate excess body fat, but it is not a guaranteed solution for cellulite. Cellulite is caused by pockets of fat that push against connective tissues under the skin and can result in a dimpled or lumpy appearance. While liposuction can remove some fat from the affected area, it does not address the underlying cause of cellulite. Some patients see a temporary improvement in the appearance of their cellulite following liposuction, but others may not see any change at all. Therefore, it is essential to discuss your goals and expectations before deciding on any treatment option for cellulite.

Will I be put to sleep during liposuction?

With the aid of tumescent fluid, you may only require local anesthesia, depending on the scope of your operation. This contrasts with general anesthesia, which puts the patient completely under for the surgery. During your consultation, anesthesia options will be discussed thoroughly. Will there be scarring after lipo?

Will there be scarring after lipo?

Lipo scars are generally very small, about the size of a freckle. Most patients find them to be inconspicuous, if not practically invisible. Your surgeon will do their best to minimize scarring and may recommend scar treatments or creams to help diminish any visible marks. Remember to follow our instructions and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

Will fat return after liposuction?

You may be wondering if fat removed with liposuction can come back after the procedure. The short answer is no. Once fat cells have been destroyed through liposuction, those cells cannot grow back. We are all born with a set amount of fat cells, so we cannot develop new fat cells. However, the remaining fat cells left behind can enlarge and shrink with weight gain or loss. If you consume excess calories and gain weight after liposuction surgery, your remaining fat cells will store the excess fat. As a result, fat can appear in different body parts. To maintain liposuction results, stick to a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise.

The Day of Your Liposuction Procedure

There are different types of liposuction, such as laser-assisted liposuction (“laser lipo” or “liposuction laser”), power-assisted liposuction (PAL), and others. At Concierge Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, we use power-assisted liposuction. Compared to traditional liposuction, power-assisted liposuction is faster and less invasive. This procedure also creates less surrounding tissue trauma, promoting more rapid healing. Nevertheless, all liposuction techniques follow the same basic principles.

The process will begin with your pre-determined anesthesia method, which we’ll establish during your consultation. During the procedure, the excess fat in your body is removed through a thin, hollow cannula inserted into the body through small incisions. The cannula is attached to a machine that generates energy to help break up and remove fat tissue. During the procedure, the cannula is inserted into the target area and moved back and forth to loosen the fat cells. It can then break up the fat and suction it out of the body while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This process is repeated until the desired amount of fat has been removed.

We’re also pleased to offer one of the least-invasive versions of the procedure available. This includes “tumescent lipo.” Before removing the excess fat, we will inject a sterile solution into the targeted fat tissue. This solution is known as tumescent fluid. It consists of salt water, lidocaine, and epinephrine. The saltwater breaks up the fat cells for easier removal. The lidocaine acts as a local anesthetic to decrease post-op discomfort. Epinephrine acts as a vasoconstrictor, causing blood vessels to constrict (or shrink.) This reduces blood loss, swelling, and bruising.

Recovery and Results after Liposuction

This surgery is an outpatient procedure. You can expect some temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, and tenderness in the treatment area following the treatment. A compression garment should be worn to reduce swelling and aid in healing. Strenuous activity should be limited for several weeks after surgery to allow your body time to heal. However, most patients choose to return to work within several days. As with any cosmetic surgery, individual experiences may vary. Swelling typically subsides within several weeks, at which point you will start to see your results. Your body will still be healing and adjusting to the changes made by the surgery, but the areas of your body where fat was removed will start to appear slimmer and more contoured. Once swelling fully subsides, you will be able to enjoy your final results. Results are generally very long-lasting. However, while liposuction can help you achieve a more sculpted body shape by removing excess fat cells, the remaining fat cells can still store excess fat. It is essential to continue a healthy lifestyle to maintain the results of liposuction surgery.
