Smoother, brighter, more radiant skin — with zero downtime.

Dermaplaning is one of the fastest ways to reveal a fresh, glowing complexion. Using a sterile surgical blade, our licensed aestheticians gently exfoliate the outermost layer of dead skin cells and remove fine vellus hair (often called "peach fuzz") from the face. The result is an immediately smoother, more even skin texture and a brighter, more luminous look — no needles, no chemicals, no recovery time.

At our Northbrook med spa, dermaplaning is performed one-on-one by trained skincare professionals as a standalone treatment or paired with a facial, chemical peel, or other skin-rejuvenating service for enhanced results.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

  • Instantly smoother skin — removes the buildup of dead skin cells that can leave skin looking dull or rough.
  • Brighter, more even complexion — exfoliation helps diminish the look of fine lines and the appearance of acne scarring.
  • Peach fuzz removal — makeup applies more smoothly and skin looks more refined.
  • Better product absorption — with the outer layer of dead skin cleared away, serums and moisturizers penetrate more effectively.
  • No downtime — most clients return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

A typical dermaplaning session takes between 30 and 60 minutes. Your aesthetician will cleanse the skin, then hold it taut while gently guiding a sterile blade at a 45-degree angle across the face in short, feathering strokes. The treatment is painless for most clients, sometimes described as feeling similar to a light scraping sensation. Many clients pair dermaplaning with a hydrating mask or facial to maximize glow.

Some mild redness or sensitivity is normal immediately afterward and typically subsides within a few hours.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Dermaplaning is safe for most skin types and is a popular choice for clients seeking a low-commitment way to refresh their complexion before a big event or as part of a regular skincare routine. It's not recommended for anyone with active acne breakouts, eczema, psoriasis, or open wounds in the treatment area — we recommend waiting until the skin has fully healed. If you're currently taking isotretinoin (Accutane) or another systemic retinoid, we ask that you wait at least six months after stopping the medication, since these treatments thin the skin and increase sensitivity to the blade.

During your complimentary consultation, our team will review your skin history and goals to confirm dermaplaning — or a complementary treatment — is the right fit.

Aftercare Tips

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily, since freshly exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive.
  • Hold off on retinoids, AHA/BHA exfoliants, and vitamin C serums for 24–72 hours after treatment.
  • Keep skin hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.
  • Avoid additional exfoliation (scrubs, at-home dermaplaning tools) until your next scheduled treatment.

Dermaplaning FAQs

Will dermaplaning make my hair grow back thicker or darker?

How often should I get dermaplaning?

Can I wear makeup after my appointment?

Is dermaplaning the same as a facial?

Will dermaplaning make my hair grow back thicker or darker?

No. This is a common myth. Vellus hair grows back at the same texture and thickness. Shaving or dermaplaning does not change the hair follicles.

How often should I get dermaplaning?

Most clients achieve the best results by scheduling dermaplaning treatments every 3 to 4 weeks, which aligns with the skin's natural renewal cycle.

Can I wear makeup after my appointment?

Yes. Many clients find that makeup applies more smoothly and evenly immediately after dermaplaning because the skin's surface is freshly exfoliated.

Is dermaplaning the same as a facial?

Not exactly. Dermaplaning is a targeted exfoliation treatment, while a facial focuses on cleansing, hydration, and other skincare techniques. Many patients choose to combine both treatments for enhanced results.
